Avid readers of my blog (of which there are none) may remember that sometime last year I added a Bluetooth module to my Tablet PC. The primary reason: so that I could use Bluetooth to synchronise Outlook with my Smartphone.
This scenario is great except for one immensely annoying issue. Neither the ActiveSync client on the desktop or Smartphone has a "disconnect" option. Unlike USB I can't just pull the plug on Bluetooth. If I take one of the devices out of range the connection drops - no problem. When I put my M200 into standby the connection drops, but when I switch the machine back on the virtual serial port linking ActiveSync to the Smartphone is "in-use". Until yesterday I knew of only two solutions to the problem.
1. Reboot (Hello? Its 2005, my M200 comes out of standby in 3 seconds, I *never* reboot).
2. Fire up the device manager, delete and recreate the virtual serial port. (not a simple task, and not something I want to do several times a day).
Yesterday I decided to invest some brainpower into finding a simpler solution. Fortunately not much brainpower was required.
Restarting the Bluetooth Support Service is enough.
> net stop BthServ
> net start BthServ
So, things are getting simpler. Unfortunately I still have to invoke these commands with administrative rights.
