Recently I've been doing a lot of text entry and editing using the Tablet Pc Input Panel (the SP2 TIP). I prefer the undocked or floating mode because it doesn't consume valuable screen real estate or constrain my hand to one position on the screen. However one aspect of the TIP behaviour has been bugging me: unless there is writing in the panel, the floating tip will automatically close when the pen moves away from the screen. This is useful when I'm filling in small text fields, but for large pieces of writing I'd prefer to have the TIP remain open after I've inserted a sentence and I'm thinking about what to write next or while I'm reviewing my work and selecting parts for editing - it's not natural to keep my hand on the screen all the time.
But as of today I can finally strike this item from my wish-list. I've just realised that the TIP already has this (undocumented?) behaviour. In fact we get the best of both worlds - a TIP which automatically closes when we want it to and a TIP which remains open for as long as desired.
To cause a floating TIP to stay open simply move it from its default location - that's all there is to it!
Maybe this behaviour is obvious to other people, it certainly seems obvious enough now - but that said, it's taken over a month for me to realise it was there.
